Select the program of your preference and experience another culture and language by being part of a family rather than viewing as a tourist. at least two to three years of language study, except for programs where there is no foreign language requirement,

an interest in learning about the culture of the host country,

a willingness to speak and learn more of the host language,

age requirements - 15 (on departure) to 18 years of age,

a commitment to participating fully in the daily life of the host family.

The short programs of two to ten weeks are offered during your school holidays. By participating in a program, you have the advantage, when overseas, of spending time on holidays with your host family as well as attending a local high school. You travel with other Australian students and an accompanying teacher.

For an in-depth language and cultural immersion, spend three months, a semester or a school year in another country. You live with a host family and attend a local high school, participating in the cultural life of the country.

For specific details on the country of your choice, please complete the Request Info Form and a brochure will be posted to you.

   Step 1

To apply for a Nacel program, print out the Student Application and mail to Nacel Australia. This form must be accompanied by a payment of $50. How To Pay. If you pay on-line send a copy of the transaction with the form.

   Step 2

A reference is obtained from your language teacher, or from your form teacher if you are not participating in a language program. For long term programs, a second reference is requested from a family friend.

   Step 3

After positive references are received in the Nacel office an acceptance letter is sent, with a Student Application Dossier to complete, to those applying for a short term program. The Dossier is to be returned with a further deposit of $500. This step should be completed at least four months before departure for short term students.

If you are applying for a long term program, you are sent a Long Term Student Application Dossier and a request for a further deposit of $700. Your completed Dossier is reviewed and, if assessed favourably, your local Nacel coordinator will contact you to arrange an interview. Upon receiving a positive report from the Nacel coordinator, you are sent a formal letter of acceptance and a request for further documents. This step should be completed six months before departure for long term students.

   Step 4

Final payment is due 70 days before departure and 90 days for long term programs and school groups.

Step 5

After returning all the necessary documents and making final payment, you are sent a Departure Package that includes a student handbook, insurance details and visa forms and instructions if applicable.

   Step 6

Participants on short term programs, and their parents, are invited to an orientation meeting about 10 weeks before departure. At the meeting your local Nacel coordinator will discuss preparing for the program, what participants should expect while on the program and other relevant issues.

A Nacel coordinator contacts long term students individually regarding preparations for the program.

   Step 7

Students are usually notified of their host family details about two weeks before departure for short term programs and eight weeks before departure for long term programs. There are occasions, however, when unexpected delays occur.

   Step 8

About one week before departure, participants are invited to attend a pre-departure meeting organised by a Nacel coordinator. At the meeting you receive a pre-departure package that includes your airline ticket and travel itinerary, Nacel name badge, insurance card and details of necessary contacts overseas.

Nacel reserves the right to adjust program costs and flight dates if unforeseen changes occur in any area.

Applications:
Applications for programs of less than ten weeks are due four months prior to departure. For Long Term Programs, applications are due six months before departure. Applications received after the deadlines are considered late and acceptance is subject to availability of places.
